Swapping a high-flying career in law to become the author of romantic thrillers was a change of gear that surprised even Louise Ross. Nevertheless, while on maternity leave with her son Ethan, now two, the 30-year-old from Hertfordshire decided to give up her job to put pen to paper.

“I had been umm-ing and ahh-ing for a while,” says Louise. “Even before I was pregnant with Ethan, I hadn’t been enjoying my job as much as I had hoped. Being an author is everyone’s dream, but having my son gave me the space to consider it seriously. I had no expectations. I just wrote for the enjoyment of it, and kept it under my hat initially.”
