New Zealand Society of Authors Heritage Week Writing Competition

Beca Heritage Week will be held in Christchurch on 9 - 26 October 2015 and the New Zealand Society of Authors is getting involved by running a competition for writers.


This year’s Heritage Week theme is Arrivals and Departures - The journeys that have shaped us. The theme focuses on various anniversaries that have happened in 2015 so it offers lots of scope for writers. 

Any writer resident in New Zealand can enter a short story, poem, or essay on the theme. There is also a Heritage Book of the Year Award on an open theme.

Here are the details for each of the categories:

Heritage Book of the Year

Fiction and non-fiction eligible
Book must be published between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2015
Entry fee $35
Prize = $1000

Short Story Heritage Award

Maximum 1800 words
Entry fee $15
Prize = $400

Non-fiction Essay Heritage Award

Maximum 1800 words
Entry fee $15
Prize = $400

Poem Heritage Award

Maximum 50 lines
Entry fee $15
Prize = $400

How to enter:


Post two copies of each entry to:

Christchurch 8042

Each entry must be accompanied by a separate sheet with the author’s full name, address, email, phone number, title of the entry and the entry category (short story, essay, poem or book).

Please also provide an electronic copy of your entry either by enclosing a USB or CD with Word document with your printed entry or by emailing the entry to heritageweek2015@gmail.com.

Entries close 21 September 2015.

Does that mean 2 hard copies by post as well as an electronic version?
