Irish Laureate scheme to 'raise the bar' The new post of Laureate for Irish Fiction will help create “formal links between well-established, highly skilled novelists and those in the early stages of learning their craft”, and could help “raise the bar” for other schemes, according to its supporters. The first Laureate for Irish Fiction will be chosen in January, serving a three-year term. Among the 34 authors nominated for the job are Anne Enright, Roddy Doyle, John Banville, Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction winner Eimear McBride and Guardian First Book Award winner Donal Ryan.
