Pete the Bushman lives in an
isolated town on the rugged West coast. you’ll find it south of hokitika,
between lake lanthe and the waitaha river. when you get there it wont be
bustling. the population numbers exactly two.
Peter Salter is a true kiwi bloke. He can hunt,
fish, and eks out a living from the bush. Pete the Bushman is his story. It’s the story of a true New Zealand
bushman, of a life lived against the grain, of adventure in New Zealand’s
thickest wilderness and a lifestyle any kiwi bloke would envy.
Pete has lived a life inseparable from the bush and
these are his stories and lessons, most learned the hard way. They involve
weather and women, mountains and helicopters, wild horses and gelignite,
bureaucrats, possum pie and the politics of poison.
Want to know more about Pete?
·
He’s a conservationist in his own way, though many
conservationists don’t agree with him (he’s anti 1080 but pro cyanide)
·
He owns his own town called Pukekura where he’s
lived for 35 years and which he’s made into a tourist destination (well, along
with his wife Justine)
·
He and Justine got married in wedding outfits made
of possum on top of a peak in the Southern Alps
·
He’s won awards for his wild food, and then come a
cropper with the government for his famous
possum pies
·
He’s had a few near misses when hunting so he’s not
above dressing a dead deer in an orange Day-Glo jacket for safety
·
He might just be the closest thing New Zealand has
to Crocodile Dundee
