The Alliance of Radical Booksellers received a “record number of submissions” for the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing this year and has issued its seven-strong shortlist.

Shortlisted are: Undercover: The True Story of Britain's Secret Police by Rob Evans and Paul Lewis (Faber); Soldier Box: Why I Won't Return to the War on Terror by Joe Glenton (Verso); Story of a Death Foretold: The Coup against Salvador Allende, 11 September 1973 by Oscar Guardiola-Rivera (Bloomsbury); Who Needs the Cuts? : Myths of the Economic Crisis by Barry Kushner and Saville Kushner (Hesperus); No Place to Call Home: Inside the Real Lives of Gypsies and Travellers by Katharine Quarmby (Oneworld); Cancel the Apocalypse: The New Path to Prosperity by Andrew Simms (Little, Brown); and Revolting Subjects: Social Abjection and Resistance in Neoliberal Britain by Imogen Tyler (Zed Books)
.
Now in its third year, the Bread & Roses Awards seeks to celebrate excellence in the field of radical political non-fiction. Trustee for the Bread & Roses Nik Górecki, said: “We had a record number of submissions this year, and from an ever-growing range of publishers, which has made for a very strong shortlist. I’m delighted to see the prize growing in recognition.”

He added: “I’m very much looking forward to the award ceremony at the London Radical Bookfair, which is set to top our successful inaugural event last year. This time around we are working in partnership with the Alternative Press Fair and Bishopsgate Institute, and our combined efforts should make for a wonderful event. There’ll be so much going on the day – to much to mention in full - but I’m particularly excited by the fact that there will be an exhibition of artworks based on the Bread and Roses shortlist on display.”

The winner will be announced by guest judges Jess McCabe, Nina Power, and Seamus Milne at a ceremony at the London Radical Bookfair on Saturday 10th May at the Bishopsgate Institute. Also announced at this ceremony will be the ARB’s children’s prize, The Little Rebel’s Children’s Book Award, the shortlist for which will be announced at the end of the month.
