Michael Harlow wins 2014 Lauris Edmond
Memorial Award for Distinguished Contribution to Poetry in New
Zealand
Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing Anne
Kennedy receive the Nigel Cox Unity Books prize. Today it was Michael Harlow’s
turn. Five poets read from their work in a richly rewarding Writers’ Week
luncthime session, chaired by Frances Edmond, at the Hannah Playhouse today.
Riemke Ensing and Jenny Bornholdt are previous winners of the award, which
commemorates distinguished Wellington writer Lauris Edmond.
Also reading were
Geoff Cochrane, Michael Harlow, and Vivienne Plumb (I loved her celebrations of
luncheon sausage and Crown Lynn). Frances
Edmond then announced that Michael was the 2014 winner. The award was presented
to him by Laurice Gilbert, president of the New Zealand Poetry Society, which
administers it in collaboration with Lauris Edmond’s literary estate.
