Calico Publishing Newsletter March 2014

A very big welcome to the first ever newsletter of Calico Publishing. With so much happening of late, we thought it was high time we shared our highlights with authors, colleagues and friends. Publishing Director Linda Cassells has been hard at work showcasing her list on the international stage at the Frankfurt and Taipei book fairs, while running a small publishing company that keeps building steadily year on year. Apart from our latest news, our newsletter will also cover links to reviews and information about author events, so please do get in touch to notify us of anything that might be of interest.

Dealing Daily with Dementia: sale of German rights

At the Frankfurt Book Fair 2013: Marion Ullrich and Susanne Krueger from Shattauer

Attending the Frankfurt Book Fair for five years running has allowed Calico to grow into a little international star. Our most recent success is the German language rights sale of Angela Caughey’s book Dealing Daily with Dementia, which joins the line-up of Calico books making a buzz internationally.

Stuttgart-based medical publisher Schattauer Press is the buyer, and for Rights Manager Marion Ullrich the novelty of dealing with a New Zealand publisher – ‘a first in Schattauer’s history (since 1949), from here nearly to our antipode’ – shows just how recent a phenomenon New Zealand success in the book world is.

The strong German interest in Calico titles is largely thanks to the higher profile of New Zealand books following on from our Guest of Honour year at Frankfurt in 2012 – not to mention Linda’s stalwart efforts at the fair over the last five years. Perseverance can really pay off.

Author Angela Caughey will be speaking this month at Metlifecare Blockhouse Bay (Tuesday 11 March), and at the Kohimarama Ladies' Probus Group (Monday 24 March).
