Cameron will tackle movie based on bestselling thriller novel, despite saying he would stick to Avatar movies in future
James Cameron plans to direct an adaptation of equatorial Africa-set thriller novel The Informationist once he has finished Avatars 2 and 3.
The Canadian film-maker has optioned the rights to Taylor Stevens's bestselling novel, which centres on the information specialist Vanessa Munroe. The story sees the character, described by producer Jon Landau as a "mix of Lisbeth Salander and Jason Bourne", finding herself back in the Africa of her childhood after being hired by a Texan oil billionaire to find his missing daughter.
"Vanessa Munroe is an intriguing and compelling heroine with an agile mind and a thirst for adventure," said Cameron. "Equally fascinating for me is her emotional life and her unexpected love story. I'm looking forward to bringing Vanessa and her world to the big screen."
Landau added: "This is one of the most cinematic books I've ever read. And it's got all the classic Jim Cameron elements – a female protagonist who is smart, physically adept and skilled, great action, and an unexpected love story."
The Informationist was published in 2011. A sequel, The Innocent, arrived earlier this year and a third book featuring Munroe, The Doll, is due in 2013.
Cameron's optioning of the first novel in the series rather undercuts the film-maker's assertion in May that he would probably stick to directing Avatar movies for the rest of his career. "I'm in the Avatar business. Period. That's it," he told the New York Times. "I'm making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4, and I'm not going to produce other people's movies for them. I'm not interested in taking scripts."
Avatar 2 and 3 appear likely to be shot back to back, with the first sequel arriving in cinemas in 2015. Released in 2009, Cameron's 3D megalith has made a staggering $2.7bn (£1.6bn) worldwide and currently stands as the highest-grossing film of all time.Cameron will tackle movie based on bestselling thriller novel, despite saying he would stick to Avatar movies in future.
