Luke Harding is a journalist at The Guardian, and was the newspaper’s Moscow correspondent from 2007 until earlier this year. He recounts his Russian experiences in his book, Mafia State: How One Reporter Became an Enemy of the Brutal New Russia (Guardian Books, ISBN: 978-0-85265-247-3).
8:45 Nina Huang
Nuan-Ting (Nina) Huang is a student at Diocesan School for Girls. Her research into the possible link between mental concentration and the early onset of short sightedness won her the Supreme Award of the Royal Society competition Realise the Dream 2011, and the $50,000 Prime Minister’s Future Scientist Prize.

Julian Priest was a co-founder of the early wireless network community in the UK, and currently lectures in creative technologies at AUT University in Auckland. His current artistic practice concerns the boundaries of technology and environment with a focus on energy. He is director of the Green Bench project room in Whanganui, and has created a distinct time zone that reacts and responds to movement for the group show, Local Knowledge, at The Dowse in Lower Hutt (17 December to 22 April 2012).

Mary Kisler is the Senior Curator, Mackelvie Collection, International Art, at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. She will discuss the work of Italian architects Andrea Palladio and Carlo Scarpa, and sculptor Antonio Canova. Harry Christophers is the founder and conductor of The Sixteen, one of the world’s great period ensembles (comprising both choir and period-instrument orchestra). He is also a regular guest conductor for many of the world’s major symphony orchestras and opera companies. The Sixteen Choir and Orchestra will present two concerts at the New Zealand International Arts Festival 2012 (24 February to 18 March).

Gary Henderson is a New Zealand playwright and theatre director, and has been teaching the playwriting course at Unitec's Department of Performing and Screen Arts since the beginning of 2006. His play, Peninsula, set in a small-town community on Banks Peninsula in the 1960s, will be presented at Circa Theatre during the New Zealand International Arts Festival 2012.
11:45 Gardening with Kath Irvine
Kath Irvine has spent years teaching permaculture and gardening to schools and community groups. Her Edible Backyard workshops, run from her garden in Ohau, teach how to grow food and create edible backyards. She will talk about summer gardening and watering.
