Friendship, Compulsion, Colour and Art Pieced Together in Mosaics

When Elizabeth Atkins-Hood’s grandmother died, all that was left for her grandchildren was the junk under her house. Hidden amongst it was a box of broken Crown Lynn china. Determined to have a momento of her grandparents, Atkins-Hood made her first mosaic, a lampshade base from the Crown Lynn plates. That was 19 years ago. She hasn’t looked back since.
Elizabeth’s passion for mosaics is evident as soon as you enter the elegant home she designed herself near Warkworth, just north of Auckland.
Former art gallery and antiques’ shop owner, Joy Bell was already a successful commercial artist when she turned to mosaics.  It has since become her obsession, something she’ll happily admit.
‘I’ve taken over the sheds, almost all the floor space and have started mosaicing the outside walls of the house! I spend all my spare time doing it and have about six projects going at any one time.’
Living in an 1886 deconsecrated church, Joy’s interest in medieval art, over-the-top Victoriana and Art Noveau fits in beautifully.
By coincidence the two  (left) live virtually next door to each other. As the friendship grew, the idea of a book was born…
