Encountering The Kermadecs: Art meets Science in New Zealand’s subtropical islands

Gregory O’Brien is a Wellington-based poet, essayist and visual artist. In May this year, he was one of nine artists who voyaged on the HMNZS Otago to the Kermadec Islands. With him on the expedition were John Pule, Fiona Hall, Jason O’Hara, Elizabeth Thomson, John Reynolds, Bruce Foster, Phil Dadson and Robin White. He is organising an exhibition of the artists' work on the Kermadecs that opens at the Maritime Mueseum later this year
He will present a richly-illustrated account of their encounter with this imaginative frontier using narrative, poetry, and film.
