Do Authors Make Good Publishers?

Book2Book  - Monday 03 Jan 2011

The answer is No. But it’s fascinating to watch them try.

Unfortunately, in order to master publishing skills, authors face the prospect of abandoning commitment to their muse. Digital technology has given writers the key to the funhouse, and few have been able to resist the allure of all those glittering tools empowering them to steal fire from Simon & Schuster, Penguin and Random House.

It's amazing how many books the Legal Deposit Office receives from "non-commercial publishers" - a decade ago it was over 2,000 a year. The vast bulk of these are memoirs for family members, local club histories and the like, but we often see examples for a wider audience where the author has simply gone to the local printer down the road to put it all together - which usually has no skills in editing and presentation - instead of a professional book producer like us. A real pity but that isn't going to change.
