Darina Allen - Only at Cook the Books

Darina Allen is coming to NZ, and her one & only public event will be a customer evening at Cook the Books on Thursday 16 December 2010 starting at 6pm.

Although she needs no introduction, Darina is the owner of Ballymaloe Cookery School in Shanagarry, Co Cork, Ireland. She is a teacher, food writer, newspaper columnist, cookbook author and television presenter. Her list of awards and accomplishments are too numerous to mention – needless to say, if we were compiling a list of “dream in-store guests”, Darina would be in the running for the top spot.

Join us for an evening of stories from a lifetime in “food”, with Ireland’s “best known” Chef. On the night we will be serving seasonal food inspired by Darina's recipes, matched with fine wine from Vidal Estate.

Tickets for this event are strictly limited. $10pp, fully redeemable on any purchase from Cook the Books on the night.

The Forgotten Skills of Cooking - $80

In her most recent book Forgotten Skills of Cooking Darina reconnects you with the cooking skills that missed a generation or two. The book is divided into chapters such as 'Dairy', 'Fish', 'Bread' and 'Preserving' and forgotten processes such as smoking mackerel, curing bacon and making yogurt and butter are explained in the simplest terms.
The delicious recipes show you how to use your homemade produce to its best, and include ideas for using forgotten cut of meat, baking bread and cakes and even eating food from the wild. The 'Vegetables and Herbs' chapter is stuffed with growing tips to satisfy even those with the smallest garden plot or window box, and there are plenty of suggestions for using gluts of vegetables. You'll even discover how to keep a few chickens in the garden. With 600 pages, and over 700 recipes, this is the definitive modern guide to traditional cookery skills.

We will have limited stock of this available to purchase on the night. If you would like to reserve a copy, please let us know in the comments section of the online booking.

Darina's other titles - Healthy Gluten-Free Eating ; Ballymaloe Cookery Course and A Year at Ballymaloe will all be available to purchase on the night.
