Borders Interested in Buyout of Barnes & Noble

With the traditional book-retailing business under seige, activist hedge-fund manager Bill Ackman, who holds a 37% stake in Borders Group Inc., said he would be prepared to finance the bookseller's purchase of larger rival Barnes & Noble for about $900 million.

Until recently, the thought of combining two bookselling giants would have set off antitrust alarm bells, but the book industry has been upended by the Internet. Amazon.com Inc. is now a retailing powerhouse, both in printed books and digital books.
