Unpublished authors shortlisted by Sony

The Bookseller - 03.11.10  - Katie Allen

Three up-and-coming writers have been shortlisted for the inaugural Sony Reader Award, the category for unpublished writers within the 2010 Dylan Thomas Prize.

The shortlist comprises Claire McGowan's The Fall, the story of two women brought together by an act of violence in modern-day London; Benjamin Wood's The Bellwether Revivals, about two students at Cambridge; and Bitter Sixteen, Stefan Mohamed's story of an eccentric Welsh teenager with superhero powers.

Judge Cerys Matthews, radio DJ and ex-Catatonia frontwoman, said: "The quality of entrants has been extremely high and it has been a joy to experience firsthand the level of unpublished literary talent in this innovative new category."

The inaugural Sony Reader Award supports writers under 30, and uses electronic book formats from submission to judging to publication.

The winning novel will be announced at the Dylan Thomas Prize ceremony in Swansea on 1st December, where the writer will receive £5,000 and the chance for their book to be published as an e-book.
