Faber buys novel from Nobel winner

19.10.10 - Graeme Neill - The Bookseller

Faber has bought a new novel from its Nobel Prize-winning author Mario Vargas Llosa.
Publishing director Lee Brackstone bought UK and Commonwealth excluding Canada to The Dream of the Celt from the Balcells Agency. Faber plans to publish in spring 2012.

The book will be published in Spanish next month as El sueno del celta. It is about Irish rebel and human rights campaigner Roger Casement, who was knighted in 1911 for his exposure of Peruvian atrocities but hanged five years later for his involvement in a plot to further Irish independence.

Brackstone said: "I have just returned from Frankfurt where Mario's Nobel triumph was celebrated by an extraordinary gathering of international publishing figures. After speaking to Spanish colleagues at the Fair, it is clear The Dream of the Celt is a major Vargas Llosa novel; a book that paints a sympathetic portrait of a contradictory and controversial character, whose political and humanitarian preoccupations still resonate today.
"This novel will clearly stand alongside The Feast of the Goat, The War of the End of the World, and Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter as one of Vargas Llosa's masterpieces."
