Waterstone's slashes price of pocket e-reader to £99.99

Waterstone's has slashed the price of its Sony Pocket Edition e-book reader to £99.99, making it the cheapest on the market. The price change was made in store and online yesterday (9th August). When it first went on sale in September last year, it was priced at £179. The price of the Sony Touch Edition, £199, has not changed.

The move could be seen as a direct riposte to Amazon.co.uk, which two weeks ago announced it would sell the wi-fi Kindle reader to UK customers for £109.

A Waterstone's spokesperson refused to comment whether this pricing change was in response to Amazon. David Kohn, head of e-commerce, said: "Sony’s electronic readers have led the market since Waterstone’s introduced the first model in 2008. At £99.99, the Pocket Edition Reader is unbeatable value, allowing owners access to e-books from Waterstones.com and elsewhere, rather than restricting them to one source."
