BAD BOY
Peter Robinson
Hodder & Stoughton, Trade Paperback, $38.99
The new DCI Alan Banks novel

Chief Inspector Alan Banks has picked a particularly bad time to go on holiday. He is on the far side of America, easing his exhausted mind and body, when the mother of his daughter’s best friend comes looking for him to report a problem. She has found a gun in the girl’s cupboard and thought she would get a little advice if she talked to Alan about it. Pressed into discussing the matter with Banks’s colleague, DI Annie Cabot, she unwittingly unleashes a string of events that lead from one to another ... each aggressively worse than the one before.

This is another dark, classy and contemporary thriller from a master crime writer and author of twenty two books. Peter Robinson has again taken his title from a song for the novel – I’ve Been a Bad, Bad Boy by Paul Jones. In this case, it is moot whether it refers to the mercurial, vicious young villain or the rebellious, brooding and single-minded detective.

I was so happy to learn that Stephen Tompkinson was chosen to play the role of Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks in the Banks series on ITV. I only wish that I could view it in the United States, as I am an avid fan of the Alan Banks novels of Peter Robinson. One does not simply read the novels of Peter Robinson; rather one becomes immersed in them.
