SPORT 38

Fergus Barrowman, whose day job is at VUP, reports that the new issue of Sport, no. 38, is selling like hotcakes and will go out of print very soon. He thinks this is because it’s bloody good: ‘It’s my equal favourite along with no. 1, which can never be bettered of course, and no. 11, which was Emily Perkins’ publishing debut.’ A feature interview in the Dominion Post  and exposure at AWRF have helped.

Sport 38 includes a remarkable 18 unpublished writers, most of them recent graduates of the IIML, and there are some particularly strong short stories.
In addition, as a bonus for subscribers and Unity Books customers there is a sealed envelope, with printed on it: ‘WHAT’S IN HERE? A poem by James Brown, in 10 stanzas which can be read in any order, except the first and last stanzas, with drawings by Anastasia Doniants, brought to you by UNITY BOOKS, on the occasion of the publication of SPORT 38.’

Fergus has kindly allowed me to reproduce a couple of the drawings, and the stanzas they accompany, as a sneak preview. Anastasia Doniants is a young Aucklander of Armenian Russian origin. She also did the truly stunning cover.
