BIG NEWS FROM SMALL PUBLISHER

Gecko Press has had a busy, eventful and successful start to 2009.
Publisher Julia Marshall has just returned from the annual Bologna International Children’s Book Fair. ‘There is a strong feeling overseas that this is a good time to be a highly-focussed independent publisher – and that quality children’s books are holding up well in the market.’
‘I’m really pleased that after four years Gecko Press has found a niche that has secured its place in the local market and is experiencing a very healthy growth abroad.

WHITE RAVEN AWARD
My Village: Rhymes from around the world by Danielle Wright was awarded a White Raven by IYL (International Youth Library) at this year’s Bologna International Children’s Book Fair in March. Only 250 children’s books from all around the world win one of these awards each year. Last year, Snake and Lizard received the same honour.

LOCAL AWARD
Gecko Press is a finalist in the ‘Emerging Gold’ category at this year’s Gold Awards, the annual Wellington regional business awards. Winners will be announced 13 May.

NEWS ABROAD
Bologna was very exciting this year,’ says Marshall. Gecko Press sold the World English rights to My Village to Frances Lincoln, publishers of Margaret Mahy in the UK. It also sold the foreign language rights for Snake and Lizard to Germany and Japan. Snake and Lizard English language rights have previously been sold to Australia, the US, Canada and the Phillipines.
MORE ON SNAKE & LIZARD
In New Zealand, Snake and Lizard, the delightful book by Joy Cowley and Gavin Bishop, has just achieved Bronze status on the NZ Bestsellers list. This is a first for Gecko Press. Last year, it won NZ Post Book of the Year. The follow-up book, Friends: Snake and Lizard, will be published in October.

OVERSEAS DISTRIBUTION
Gecko Press books are now being distributed in the UK/Eire and the EU by Bounce! Sales & Marketing, a great company who represent ‘the best independent children’s publishers’.
