NEW ZEALAND JOURNEY
Verena & Georg Popp
Craig Potton Publishing - $49.99

Spend an hour browsing this visually stunning book and you quickly understand why Craig Potton Publishing has earned a reputation as New Zealand’s leading publisher of spectacular photographic books featuring the New Zealand landscape .

This new book is nothing less than a visual feast that makes you want to pack a bag, jump in the car and head off to visit The Catlins, Stewart Island, the Marlborough Sounds, Taranaki and all the other places that are so magnificently portrayed by the extraordinary photography of Georg and Verena Popp.
Nearly all the superb images feature locations that are easily accessible.
The Popps who are based in Vienna, (but are regular and frequent visitors to New Zealand), specialize in traditional large-format landscape photography and are internationally known for their skill in this medium.
Here is a brief extract from the two pages of Photographers’ Notes that appear at the back of the book:

Nearly all the landscape images were taken with a 4 x 5” large format camera and equipment. Nature photography of this kind is quite painstaking, tiresome, complicated, old-fashioned and rather costly. Everything still functions manually, neither zoom lenses are auto-focus are available, and our headlamps and hand-held spot meter (for determining the exposure) are the only battery-driven devices to be found in our backpacks. Large-format landscape photography is also still largely analogue, which means using film.

It all sounds incredibly cumbersome to this layman who manages to get things wrong even with an-everything-automatic-can’t-fail digital camera!
But the finished result in NEW ZEALAND JOURNEY is truly spectacular and I’ll wager that copies sent to ex-pat Kiwis around the world this Christmas will stun the recipients and induce in them a great longing for this beautiful place we call home.
My thanks and congratulations to our talented visiting Austrian photographers for their splendid art, and also to their publisher for pulling it all together so beautifully.

Note - the book also comes in a pocket edition for carrying in the car or backpack. $19.99

Pic above shows Pohutukawa tree on the Karikari Peninsular, Northland.

I cannot do justice to the quality of the book's photographs but I hope this will give you some idea of the real thing, the images in the book are truly wonderful.
