THE BLACK PAGE

You never know what Joanna Black might write about in her popular Listener column but I must say this para in her column in the NZ Listener 19-25 July really struck a chord with me.

What piffle Auckland International Airport is talking when it claims that with only one duty-free outlet, as it is proposing, customers will be better off. Presumably, international passengers wanting to do duty-free shopping when there is only one shop would be as well off as passengers would be if there was only one airline. The idea that competition works best for consumers everywhere except Auckland Airport is ludicrous. The Commerce Commission should see the idea off.

Bravo Joanna. As a small shareholder in the airport and a reasonabley frequent traveller I totally endorse your comments and if Auckland Airport get their bullying way and enforce this
monopoly on us then I will do my duty-free shopping at overseas airports where competition remains strong.
